World Freestyle Watercraft Alliance

Introduction

The future of freestyle watercross is coming - and in a big way. The WFWA is solely created for Freestyle Water-X athletes who are looking to further the sport of freestyle with the use of ramps, sliders, gaps, and free ride areas. With the use of ramps, we bring the spectators close to all the high flying action in a confined area, called the WFWA street course.

The Beginning

A smaller version of this was created several years ago by former freestyle champion Lloyd Burlew. His format was basic and simple, combining freestyle jet skiing with two 5 foot launch ramps. It was a great success, but it could not be compared to wave riding because the waves allowed for more air time, which led to back-flips and double barrel rolls. The only problem with riding in the waves is that the spectators can only see the action take place from behind and as far as 100 yards away.

Time To Change

Into the picture then comes reigning 5x National and 5x World Champion Eric "The Cyclone" Malone. Eric has been the most innovative freestyle rider in the world for several years now, and began to realize that flat water freestyle was becoming too repetitive and surf riding was where the sport needed to be. The more air the rider catches the more the fans appreciate the sport of freestyle. All the riders who competed wanted to somehow get the sport into the X-Games and Gravity Games.

The Mission

With this as the main priority to help the sport of freestyle grow, he began to contemplate some ideas that would appeal to both the spectators and sponsors. It was simple - create a structured course with big ramps that would allow riders to do back flips, barrel rolls, along with new innovative tricks. The sport needed to be pushed to a higher standard, something that had never been seen before. With this goal, he knew something had to be done.
